Rehabilitation on Highway 133 to Oak Island
Reeves Construction Company was awarded the Oak Island contract in May 2018 by the North Carolina DOT. The project is to rehabilitate Bridge #14 on Hwy 133 over the lntracoastal Waterway, located in Brunswick County, NC. The Hwy 133 Bridge is one of two access routes to get to Oak Island. The project is valued at $15.8 million.
The project scope includes bridge rehabilitation and roadway asphalt resurfacing. The bridge rehabilitation includes a cathodic protection system of pile jackets and bulk anodes to reduce corrosion of the reinforcement steel in the concrete substructure as well as concrete repairs on the bridge foundation. The team will remove 1,120 LF of the bridge deck slabs and replace with new precast slabs. They will also improve safety to the barrier rail with installation of a new concrete parapet and aluminum rail, along with a polyester concrete overlay of the entire 4,250 LF bridge deck. The asphalt milling and overlay work includes three map sections of roadways in the Southport and Oak Island, NC area.
In October 2018, Reeves closed the bridge to begin the rehabilitation and reopened it to traffic on April 12th – three days ahead of schedule. The foundation and cathodic protection systems and the paving operations will be completed by June 2019. All of the team members are working hard to complete this challenging project safely for NCDOT and the residents of Oak Island, NC.
